The 1955 plan to modernise Britain’s railways set mass dieselisation in motion. The Western Region opted for diesel-hydraulic transmission. A handful of designs would come from this decision, but none were as striking as the “Western”.
Designated the Class 52, the “Western” proved the potential of hydraulic power, pulling express services with ease, and capable of 90mph operation. But, after the 1960s and 70s, rival diesel-electric power became the dominant choice for British locos.
