This game is definitely an acquired taste. It can be very unforgiving at times, and it's a little rough around the edges. That said, it definitely has some charm if it lines up with your personal tastes and preferences. Anyone expecting deep or complex combat should probably look elsewhere, as the focus on this game is more on puzzles and traps. Enemies display very simple behaviour, and combat is mostly just a matter of shooting fireballs while blocking enemy projectiles. The puzzles and traps themselves are pretty good. Challenging enough to stump you for a time, but the game always gives you the tools needed to solve them. It rewards careful observation of the environment (both through your eyes and the eyes of your raven companion). Traps can be frustrating, seemingly coming out of nowhere to kill you instantly. But this fosters an appropriate sense of caution, and there are always warning signs that your raven can see. And that's most of the game really. Avoid traps, solve puzzles, look for puzzle items and keys, kill the odd enemy or two that pop up or rush out when you get to specific places. It can be satisfying for sure, but it also feels a bit unpolished, and the environments can feel a bit lifeless. One of the highlights are the minecart sequences, if you've got the VR legs for them (and you can skip them if you don't). But there too the game felt less refined than it should, with one enemy in particular animating strangely. Graphically the game is decent. It's definitely indie and shows its Quest heritage, but the visuals are effective enough to set the mood, and some of the lighting looks quite nice. For the most part it runs smoothly, but I noticed a few spots of minor choppiness here and there. On the whole, there's definitely some elements to enjoy in Shadowgate VR. I wish the store would let me rate it 3.5/5 stars, as I think it's just a bit under a 4. It's definitely not a bad game, and worth a look for fans of old-school adventure games of the deadlier sort (like the original Shadowgate). For those, I'd say this is a solid 4. Many people with more modern sensibilities though will probably find it frustrating.
