3.5 - Fun and a good workout, but gets to be a bit one-note

I wish the store would let me rate games with half stars, because this feels like a 3.5 star game to me. The gameplay premise, basically Beatsaber but killing enemies, is executed quite well. This game can be very fun to play, especially when you find a weapon loadout that works for you. When the sequence of enemies/required attacks flows really well, it is very satisfying. There are a few different types of enemies requiring different blocks or attacks from the player, and there are a few bosses to change things up a bit. Visually it looks pretty good. It runs very well with a sharp resolution and smooth framerate (90Hz native iirc). The actual environments and enemies look pretty cool but aren't really anything mind blowing; and the soundtrack is good enough to get the adrenaline pumping, though I'm not going to seek out the OST. So what's the downside? Well to me it felt like things get a little one-note after a few hours. I mean you can change up your loadout, which does alter the gameplay a bit, but it still starts to feel a bit same-y. Beyond that, sometimes the sequence of enemies (and specifically the direction and hand you have to attack them) can feel awkward and break up the flow (like needing to swing in the same direction with the same hand twice in a row in quick succession). This is the anomaly as the sequencing is usually good and sometimes great, but when it happens it stands out. On the whole, I enjoyed my time with Rager, but it wasn't very long before I felt like I'd seen everything it had to offer. If you're looking for games to get your cardio up, or are into competing on leaderboards, you'll probably get a lot more enjoyment out of it. I could see myself jumping back into this game from time to time, but it wasn't quite compelling or varied enough for me to become part of my regular rotation.
