World of Pandora — I SEE YOU!

As a fan of Horizon Zero Dawn and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, I was surprised by how much Avatar exceeded my expectations. I’m especially glad I waited to buy it until Ubisoft added the third person POV; it makes a tremendous difference in many situations. While storytelling has never been Ubisoft’s strongest suit, they consistently make up for it with exceptional world building and fun, satisfying combat. Games like AC2, Unity, and the Layla Hassan trilogy show just how talented their teams are. I love the Avatar films, and because the game draws from such rich source material, I wasn’t surprised that the story is actually its weakest aspect. What did surprise me was how interactive the world feels. There’s a lot of gathering and a huge variety of flora to discover—it reminded me a bit of No Man’s Sky. Pandora is breathtaking; just wait until you see it at night. I was disappointed that you can’t climb everywhere, but it does make sense— Why climb when you’ve got an ikran?! Still, some of us enjoy that AC style traversal, but I won’t nitpick. Fauna is relatively sparse, and predators tend to ambush you—very true to life, I suppose. I hated the Stalker in HZD, and Avatar sometimes feels like it’s full of them, lol. Fortunately, exploration overall is far more relaxing than in many other games where you can’t go a minute without being attacked. I appreciate that the focus is more on flora, which is absolutely spectacular. I could go on and on about the beauty of Pandora and the visual design, but honestly, you just have to experience it yourself. Combat mechanics—especially the weapon wheel—feel instantly familiar, almost like a Horizon Zero Dawn game (though HZD borrowed plenty from AC). I had no trouble adjusting. Stealth, even on the easiest difficulty, is surprisingly challenging. Every time I thought it was safe, I’d end up sprinting straight at an RDA soldier and bashing them instead—it was simply faster. It makes sense that you can’t just hide behind cover and pick off enemies at your leisure—maybe even grab a meal or take a nap while you’re at it. The enemy AI is genuinely well designed. There’s plenty to do beyond the main and side missions. Gathering materials, finding food, and crafting play a big role, but you don’t have to grind endlessly—you naturally collect things as you explore. I love clearing RDA Fueling Stations and watching nature reclaim the land afterward. Avatar is a great example of how a fantasy world can serve as an allegory for our own. You can also customize your character, your ikran, and your gear. Gear can be unlocked, crafted, or purchased, and cosmetics can be found or earned. There’s enough customization to make your character feel personal without going overboard. At the time of writing this, I’ve just completed the mission that unlocks the ikran, which was my second favorite moment in the story—right after stepping into Pandora for the first time. The game is full of beautiful scenes that make you want to run into the wild and build a hut in the middle of the forest. World of Pandora — I SEE YOU! And honestly, you didn’t have to be this gorgeous, but okay.
