A certified masterpiece

Disco Elysium is a flawless exemplification of ludonarrative harmony — an existential drama that integrates simplistic gameplay mechanics with elements of detective fiction and political satire. You step into the sickly green crocodile leather shoes of a haggard, middle-aged police detective, who (for reasons unknown to the player) has consumed enough alcohol to suggest a suicide attempt. It’s from here where you can start to connect the dots; who are you, why did you try to take your own life, which case are you meant to solve, and how do you plan to assemble, overlook, or disregard the myriad pieces of this puzzle? Although it may not be palatable to the casual masses, the game stands as an undisputed masterpiece, a rare gem of literary genius, and a deep introspection on guilt, grief, and regret, while exploring how these all too familiar feelings can influence the trajectory of a person’s life, for better or worse.
