Wattam — Don’t buy — extremely poor performance (PS5 unlikely to help)

Wattam has a very unusual and creative premise. The game revolves around collecting and interacting with a wide variety of quirky characters — everyday objects like food, toilets, rocks and other strange things that come to life. As you progress, new characters constantly appear and join the world, and you interact with them to trigger different actions and chain reactions that move the game forward. Unfortunately, the performance is extremely poor. I played this on PS4 Pro with Boost Mode enabled and the game installed on an SSD, and frame rate drops and choppy FPS are noticeable almost immediately. Because of the game’s design, new characters keep appearing on screen and they cannot be removed once they join your world. As more characters accumulate, performance gradually gets worse the longer you play. Since the game constantly adds more and more objects and characters into the environment, the stuttering and inconsistent frame rate become even more noticeable over time. This ends up feeling like an extremely poorly optimised game. Based on how it performs on PS4 Pro, I doubt playing it on PS5 via backwards compatibility would make much of a difference at all. One thing that surprised me is that the game currently has around a four-and-a-half star rating on the store, which I genuinely don’t understand at all given the constant performance problems. It’s a shame because the concept is creative, but the technical issues make the experience frustrating. Because of this, I would not recommend buying it.
