A great game with greater potential

Marathon, just like a real one, is not for the faint of heart. Marathon has a wealth of deep and intricate gameplay systems that require you to pay attention, slow down, and put in the effort to learn and improve. I’m not super well versed in the extraction shooter genre, ARC Raiders was my first and I really enjoyed it. Eventually though, AR ran dry for me. Marathon has given me the complexity AR lacked, in addition to a carefully crafted narrative with expert (human) delivery and execution. The folks at Bungie know how to make satisfying combat. Guns are punchy, satisfying to fire, and varied. The abilities the various shells have access to are all unique to one another and have interesting use cases which allows for a myriad of play styles to thrive. My only qualm with the combat is that, in PvP, it doesn’t last long enough. The TTK is incredibly fast, especially at lower levels with common shields. The number of times I’ve been killed while looking through a container before I could turn my camera is…well it’s higher than I’d like it to be by a fairly decent margin. If you don’t fire the first shot, more often than not, you’ve lost the fight. There isn’t much room for outplaying someone or making a comeback in a fight if your opponent is anywhere near halfway decent. Some people will love this. I do enjoy the combat, I just wish the TTK was longer so I could enjoy it more often. Environments, immersion, visuals, and audio are all top notch. Playing solo can feel like a thrilling action adventure in one moment, and then a full on survival horror game the next. The art style Bungie has crafted is bold and unique, and exactly what it needs to be. Environments are gorgeous, signage is eye-catching, buildings are vibrantly colored, and it’s all brought to life with a haunting soundscape which will stop you in your tracks trying to figure out if you just heard someone sneaking up behind you, or if the building is creaking due to something potentially worse than another runner. PvE is also in quite a strong place. The AI enemies of the UESC are to be respected and feared. My only wish is that there was a bit more enemy variance, but I feel that is soon to come. Now, Marathon does have its issues. The readability of the UI is unforgivably atrocious (at least on release). There are dozens of different body augments to find and use, dozens of different cores to apply, and multiple variances of shields within the same rarity. In their category, all of these items have nearly, if not entirely, identical images. To figure out what you are looting or what you have in your vault or equipped, you have to hover over each and every identical-looking item. When looting under pressure, this kills momentum and is overall not fun at all. I don’t want to hover over five chest augments in a row looking for Nimble Hands only to realize three were Helping Hands and the other two were Survival Kit. Also you have to navigate every menu using the analogue stick as a mouse. One you can’t adjust the sensitivity of. This needs to be changed, especially considering a good third of this game is spent navigating menus. I will acknowledge that I’ve gotten more used to navigating menus with exclusively the analogue stick, but that doesn’t make it good, quick, or effective. Ultimately though, if you’re willing to give it the time and effort, and are looking for something complex to sink your teeth into, Marathon is a great pick. With improvements to come, I only hope that it can reach its full potential.

Brutal and not fun if you don't have friends to play with

As the title says, this game is brutal and unforgiving. IF you have friends to play with there is fun to be had. Up and down moments. If you're like me and none of your friends want to play because they didn't enjoy the Server Slam, it is brutal and wholly unfun. I was able to get a decent amount of green gear and a few blues in my vault, but 10 runs later of terrible teammates and weird glitches in the game that literally caused me to lose all my best gear twice, my vault is depleted and even completing contracts is proving tedious at best. It is very disappointing. I am trying to convince myself to slam my face into a wall again and again, but the fun times are so few and fat between

New to extraction

Yes the enemy’s are tough and the other runner are tougher but nothing beats the first extraction and making it through your first run

I think like like it.

If I “really like like it” or “love it” , then the game gets 5/5 stars but 4/5 stars is “like like it” in my book. This game genre is different to me but its challenging gameplay loop definitely grabs my attention long enough to keep trying to finish a run. The Weapons, Abilities and Controls feel intuitive and fun to use (which is plus). The Story is good so far, I just gotta finish it to give a full take on it. Ok so Personal take but, I hope bungie adds in a training room mode just so I can practice using all the tools the game has to offer. Also to mess around with teammates /friends. I’ll probably update this as I play thru the rest of the game.

Brutal

Exactly as advertised. If you’re looking for a challenge this is it. The aesthetic is great and it feels fresh. I see people compare it to Arc a lot and yea both are extraction shooters but both are unique and bring different styles.

First PvPvE extraction shooter

Helldivers 2 is the only other extraction shooter (ish) I’ve played but so far I’m liking Marathon a lot.

Finally, a Good Shooter

I have been looking for a new shooter to play for years, but the genre has been in a downward spiral for a while. This game takes many of the controls and feelings I like from other shooters and puts it in a brand new, unique look that I personally love. The lore is deep, the combat is competitive, the world is unforgiving, this game is awesome

Infil into the dark sci-fi world of Tau Ceti IV: A derelict colony rife with rival Runners, hostile UESC security forces, and hazardous environments. As you scavenge its zones for valuables with a crew or alone, tense moments of exploration break into fast-paced PvP combat where gunplay is responsive, time to kill is low, and preparation is rewarded.

Exfil to advance your seasonal power, earn cosmetics for your achievements, and assemble stronger builds with your stolen loot. Then put your gear back on the line to seek even greater fortunes in your next run.

A GRAVEYARD OF POSSIBILITIES
Trespass across deserted research facilities, rugged landscapes, and security outposts holding the remnants of a vanished expedition, yours to salvage. Tau Ceti threatens death at every turn with unique enemies, dynamic events, and environmental hazards. Each zone escalates in difficulty, preparing you for the UESC Marathon locked in the heavens.

POWERFUL. CONFIGURABLE. EXPENDABLE.
Six equippable Runner shells offer diverse playstyle foundations to build upon, like Destroyer, Recon, and Thief. Scavenge an arsenal of moddable weapons, body implants, and core system upgrades to craft countless builds. Strategize as a crew each run to form comps that maximize your combined strengths, shaping the way you approach fights and objectives.

ENEMIES EVERYWHERE
Face the unknown as a crew of two or three, or alone in solo lobbies. Or sneak into in-progress crew lobbies as Rook, a lone scavenger with no starting gear and nothing to lose. Forge uneasy alliances with rival Runners in prox chat to defeat mutual foes, but remember your new allies might revert to enemies just as quickly. Be merciless in combat: A lone survivor can reboot their crew, even from death.

Later in Season 1, compete in Rated mode to measure your skill and build a name for yourself.

INFLUENCE IS POWER
Liaise with six competing factions, each offering lucrative incentives to advance their foothold on Tau Ceti. Completing faction contracts grows your baseline power via season-long unlocks like Runner shell upgrades, stronger starting loadouts, expanded vault space, and specialized wares on offer for spare loot.

DEFRAGMENT THE TRUTH
No one knows what happened a century ago when the Marathon expedition went dark. As a trespasser into UESC territory, you are uniquely positioned to piece the story together. Unearth the skeletons of Tau Ceti’s past as you run deeper into the colony.

DEATH HANGS ABOVE
Once the way into orbit unlocks, bring your endgame build to Cryo Archive, the first floor of the UESC Marathon. Solve raid-like security measures to unseal frozen vaults and pillage the artifacts within. Every cramped corridor forces you into conflict with fully-geared enemy crews racing for the same prize. Breach the seventh vault to challenge an entity even the UESC fears.
