Nepal ligt hoog in de Himalaya, met zowel populatie uit de boeddhistische hooglanden als hindoeïstische laaglanden en heeft ondanks de ontoegankelijke ligging vastgehouden aan haar soevereiniteit. Het Nepal uit de 19de eeuw werd bestuurd door een aantal autocratische families, beschermd door krachtige Gurkha strijders. Door een overeenkomst met de Britten hield het een bepaalde mate van onafhankelijkheid op de kroon van de wereld.
