Some good advancements but microtransactions, glitches and sameness hold it back
WWE 2K26 made a lot of great strides forward. 200 created superstar slots, double the images for creations, tons of gameplay improvements, some cool new match types (inferno, dumpster, etc.) and awesome new weapons (thumbtacks!). However, the game still feels largely the same as 2K25. This year's MyRise is the laziest, most boring MyRise yet. It just feels very uninspired and unlike past years, the male and female MyRise paths are exactly the same. Showcase was actually good this year, but common problems are still frustrating. The game still has no idea you're in a different mode and just plays like it does elsewhere, making completing objectives too challenging and annoying at times rather than supporting you in creating awesome moments and reliving these matches. The Ringside Pass DLC was originally awful but they've since fixed some of the issues, such as giving you the paid DLC characters up front and making it easier to level up to the next tier. I am still not a fan of this over the season pass, but we're early on so I may come around to it. And I will say it's nice getting cool bonuses like new moves, creation parts, MyFaction packs, etc. MyGM is largely the same with some nice improvements, though I don't play that mode much so my thoughts on it are limited. Same thing for Universe. Community Creations is frustrating this year. Still no Most Recent tab and not being able to swap pages while it's loading is really annoying. It still hangs up all the time, crashes the game and just has tons of issues it's had forever. I don't play online so I won't comment on that. The Island and MyFaction are HORRIBLE this year (and I'm so sick of all the 2K20 fantasy junk. I buy a WWE game to play as WWE wrestlers, not generics like Slacks McStacks). They really had the gall to advertise more than 400 wrestlers on the roster while more than 50 of them are fake wrestlers and lots of current stars are missing from the game. For MyFaction and The Island, the forced camera angle, even more limitations, high priced microtransactions (and more than ever), pay to win leveling system, confusing powerup/leveling systems, and horribly unfair, unbalanced difficulty settings that are designed to frustrate you so you'll pay for microtransactions all make for a horrible experience. This makes unlocking really cool extra content like personas (some of which should be free updates because they're updates to outdated in-game superstars) and other items nearly impossible to unlock. It all makes for a frustrating, anti-consumer experience. I realize this is how the industry is now, but it doesn't excuse it. 2K has killed most of my fun for these games and I've played since the original Smackdown on PS1. Even before that, I was a wrestling game fan since the NES days. With the massive amount of glitches, constant crashing and just overall overly difficult, heavily monetized nature of the games now, my joy for this series is all but dead. It's really a shame because the presentation and gameplay is top notch now and it's so great to get new match types and weapons every year now. Other small changes like real life referees, more commentators, better graphics with more emphasis on blood and sweat and a lot of signs that they do listen to the fans in many ways makes it all a bittersweet experience. 2K25 was heading in the right direction in terms of microtransactions, at least in MyFaction, but this year took 10 steps back in that regard. The game just comes across as scummy and it's clear that all 2K cares about is milking this license for as much as they can. We as players need to send a clear message and refuse to spend money on VC (like I do) so they will see we don't want this crap in our wrestling games.
