JRPG Perfection

My relationship with JRPGs was never strong. As a child, games like Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior on the NES and SNES simply didn't click. It wasn't until about a decade ago, looking for something to play on my Vita, that I stumbled upon the Persona series. Everyone recommended Persona 4 Golden, and it was a revelation. I was hooked by its compelling story, vibrant visuals, and instantly memorable music, though it took me over a year to finish. The series left my radar until Persona 5 launched, and I eventually bought the Royal version at a discount. Five months and 124 hours later, I'm fully enamored again. Persona 5 Royal takes everything I loved about P4G and elevates it. Visuals The striking, comic-style UI is the first thing that grabs you. The menu system is incredibly clean and stylish, avoiding the static feel of many PC-style interfaces. The cursor itself has subtle animations, ensuring the screen is always dynamic. The gameplay visuals are equally impressive. Bustling cityscapes, highly themed palaces, and the Mementos dungeon all feel polished and detailed. The framerate is exceptionally smooth, even when streaming via PlayStation's Remote Play. The game seamlessly integrates 5-7 minute anime cutscenes for pivotal story moments, effectively signaling their importance. Audio Audio is a series staple, and P5R doesn't disappoint. Lyn's energetic "Colors Flying High" sets a perfect tone, promising a hell of an adventure. Battle themes like "Take Over" are intense but never grew tiresome over my long playtime. Even the looping environmental tracks in Mementos are catchy and groovy, suitable for listening outside the game. Mechanics The game's mechanics took some getting used to. Social links felt particularly important, with connections like "the teacher" and "the doctor" offering compelling character development and tangible upgrades. The fight-based perks from other social links became more useful later in the game. Crafting is straightforward, while the "airsoft" shop provided powerful gear, though my "story mode" difficulty and bonus starting credits may have skewed my perception. The Persona fusion system, similar to Pokémon, was initially confusing. My focus shifted from inherited perks to overall power level and new moves. "Network Fusions," which allowed me to fuse with un-owned Personas for stronger results, proved extremely useful, especially for boss fights. Story The plot of Persona 5 (and Royal) is a long, compelling tale of teens confronting corrupt adults. Told in a slightly broken-timeline, Pulp Fiction-style, the narrative exposes a range of heinous deeds that parallel the seven deadly sins. Each social link has their own personal struggles, and you, as the player, help them overcome their emotional baggage. The story follows a "small domino, big domino" pattern, where small actions build into a satisfying, if thematically complex, crescendo. DLC/Extra Content The Royal version's extra content, including an additional character, didn't feel substantial enough to alter the core experience for me. Since I didn't play the base game, I can't speak to the quality-of-life improvements the Royal edition offers. Final Verdict Persona 5 Royal is a masterpiece. It's a visually stylish game with a memorable soundtrack, deep characters, and an engaging narrative. For anyone with the time to invest, it's an incredibly rewarding experience. The game's loading screens wisely advise players to "Take Your Time," a fitting motto for this magnificent, sprawling adventure.
