Solid Monster Hunter like, but not for me

I’m not much into the “Monster Hunter” genre of games, but since I bought this game ages ago and never started it, it’s only fair that I gave it a shot. It’s fair to note that the only other game in my memory that is like this was PS Vita’s “Freedom Wars” and the story absolutely hooked me (working down my jail sentence, introducing different levels, crafting system, etc). Multiple things about GER simply didn’t. Right off the bat, I can tell that this game is from 2010. Even though it’s a remaster of a remaster, the visuals look extremely dated. Not a bad thing right from the jump, but it’s more of a ‘taste of things to come’. I found the controls cumbersome and out-of-date, but manageable after a few rounds of hunting. I knew at some point I was going to get frustrated with the game when I had to Google “God Eater Resurrection select bullets” in order to equip a certain style of bullet for a fight. The fights felt good, giving commands to teammates and having them execute them when needed, however during melee combat, the camera stayed tight to my character, causing me to ‘clip’ through the enemies, losing track of their direction. The story seemed very thin; attempting to connect with other characters primarily through text conversations was a bit off-putting and didn’t help pull me into the game emotionally or in any other way. I know from the trailer and the opening cutscenes that there IS a story and I’m sure it’s compelling, but the run-up time to get to it is a bit too long and 4 hours in, the juice doesn’t seem to be worth the squeeze. All in all, I was amused by my time with “God Eater: Resurrection” but it spoke to me in an ancient dialect of a language I understood, but felt the conversation was a bit bland for me at the time.
