They don't make em like this any more

I couldn't tell you why I ever picked this up. I never even heard of the original release, and most of the PS2 nostalgia doesn't apply to me, as the PS3 was the console that made me a hardcore gamer. But a few years back, I guess I was just in the mood to dip my toes in a game from the past. Because while I never got super into the PS2..on the PS2, I did play most of the classics once they were ported to the PS3. I've played all but one Ratchet game, platinumed Sly 1, and today, the Astro Bot series is one of my all-time favorites. So I guess I was destined to love Legend of Kay Anniversary, despite how cantankerous it can be at times. There's much to love about this game. I didn't talk much about how the solid platforming, or the vibrant color palette, or the challenging, but satisfying boss battles. But all of those positives and more almost get canceled out by many nitpicks that can all be chopped up to this game being a product of its time. You could not get away with a checkpoint system like this today. You could not get away with clunky elements in combat like this today. You could not get away with racalized animal creatures in a game like this today. But that same dated quality is what makes this game feel like such a warm hug. It is nostalgic, even if I never played the original, because it brings you back to a certain vibe, a certain era. And even though I'd never want to live there, it is sometimes nice to visit.
