1957年、British Railways（イギリス国有鉄道）のSouthern Region（サザン・リージョン）での運用を目的として、複数のディーゼル機関車が発注されました。当時BRCWタイプ3sとして知られ、Bo-Bo軸配置の貨客機関車として製造されました。1550馬力のズルツァー製エンジンを搭載し、最高速度は時速85マイルに達しました。サザン・リージョン各地でサービスが向上し、成功を収めたことでファンを獲得し、おそらくこのことが今日において29台が現存している理由となっています。現存する機関車の内、D6566 (33048) と D6575 (33057) 「シーガル（カモメ）」の2両は、 ウェストサマセット鉄道が保管しており、2両とも懐かしいイギリス国有鉄道の緑で塗装され、運用されています。
