トップクラスの特急運行のために製造されたBRクラス52は、BRのウェスタン・リージョンを時速145キロで走り抜けました。非公式な記録によると、時速177キロに到達したこともあるそうです。いずれにしてもこの車両は、液体式ディーゼル機関車による効果的な車両牽引が可能であることを証明し、60年代から70年代にかけてGWRの特急運行の標準となっていったのです。しかしながら、長期的に運行されることはなく、今日では74台中7台が現存するのみとなり、West Somerset Railway（ウェストサマセット鉄道）にて管理されています。
