Baltimore & Ohio鉄道は1870年代始め、険しいアレゲーニー山脈を越えて東西を結ぶ路線、Sand Patch Gradeを開通させました。B&O鉄道の数え切れない重厚な鉄道車両をアレゲーニー山脈の険しい尾根超えて走らせたのです。
Sand PatchがCSX車両で運行する何トンもの輸送は、重量があり、運行頻度も高く、多様です。AC4400CWなどの大型車両が輸送するのは、石炭、穀物、油、自動車、 インターモーダル輸送（複数の輸送手段を組み合わせた輸送）など多岐にわたります。年長車両のSD40-2は、登山運行のパワーを発揮し、近代車両をサポートします。一方、クラシックなGP38-2は、Cumberland操車場で、車両の組成・入換や今後の輸送のための列車の準備に、忙しく働いています。
