GP59貨物機関車を基にしたF59PHは、1980年代に新しい旅客用車両を提供するために設計されました。3,000馬力とヘッドエンドパワーを備えたF59PHは、機関車の中でもトップクラスに位置し、忙しい運行スケジュールをこなす能力を持っています。
メトロリンクは1990年代にカリフォルニアの広大なネットワークを走行するため、大量の車両を発注しました。年月が経過する中で、技術も進化しましたが、現在も走行中の2種類の新しいディーゼル車両があるにもかかわらず、F59PHは現代の排出基準に適合するように改造された型式F59PHRとして生き残っています。
