A JRPG Gatekeeping Nightmare for Newcomers

Metaphor is the most boring and overrated game I’ve played in my entire gaming life. If you’re not already into JRPGs, DO NOT touch it. It’s extremely unfriendly to newcomers—especially people like me who only knew about Persona 5 and thought this new title might be a good entry point. The story is only slightly above the level of an average anime. The characters are all stock archetypes (no pun intended) you can find in countless shows of the same genre. Their personalities never develop; they stay flat from beginning to end. Even the protagonist is bland—there’s nothing interesting about him, and everyone feels like a narrative tool serving an average plot that tries to look profound but ends up contradictory, preachy, and shallow. As for the gameplay, it’s standard JRPG fare but with less freedom and far less tolerance for mistakes. I played on normal difficulty, and as a newcomer, an early mission punished me harshly for messing up my time planning. I wasted an entire in-game period and made zero progress, forcing me to restart a whole dungeon. If you’re new and want to play casually or freely, you’re basically doomed. The calendar system seems designed to make you feel immersed, but it only left me stressed, constantly pushing me to rush through a style of gameplay I wasn’t familiar with—and that was incredibly irritating. I eventually platinumed it just to squeeze a tiny bit of value out of what I paid, and it ended up being one of the most nightmarish gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Again: if you’re not already a traditional JRPG fan, DO NOT buy it. Metaphor clearly caters well to its existing fanbase, but it fails miserably at welcoming new players.
