TARSIER Studio's Best Work Yet (SPOILER-FREE REVIEW)

To start off, I am a huge fan of the first two Little Nightmares games, and just like most people hungry for more of that series, the third left me sadly disappointed with what could've been. So when I heard about REANIMAL, being created by Tarsier Studios, the people behind the first two LN games, I was excited, like STUPIDLY excited. I latched on to every trailer, counting down the days until I could finally get my hands on this game. I just beat it about 20 minutes ago, and this game was PHENOMENAL. It surpassed every single expectation I had, and became something far greater than anything I could've dreamed of for Little Nightmares. They took the delightfully creepy atmosphere from LN and cranked it all the way up into the max, turning it into something intoxicatingly unsettling. I played it with my brother and we had our jaws dropped throughout the whole runthrough. The sound design and graphics are beautifully creepy, with each sound keeping us deeply immersed and on the edge of our seats. Tarsier once again shows us why they are some of the best in the business, unshackled from the restrictions of their previous franchise and parent company. For a game of this quality, $40 is a STEAL. My only issue is that the game couldn't last longer, with a casual playthrough lasting about under 5 hours... and that I will never be able to re-experience it for the first time ever again. I will be firmly seated for each and every DLC chapter they launch, and hope this game can not only cement itself as a modern classic, but also flourish into a long lasting franchise (if Tarsier chooses). REANIMAL defied all expectations and became not just the best co-op game I've played, but also one of the greatest horror games I've ever seen. I truly wish this game and it's devs the best, and can't wait for the future.

    Don't buy

Visuals were decent, that is the best thing that can be said about this game. There is no universe in existence where this is a $40 game, I would have been upset after beating this game if I had paid $10 or less for it. Game was very short, can easily be beaten in one sitting playing co-op, but that isn't the issue(s). There were ZERO interesting, new or unique mechanics, so don't expect co-op to be a new or fun experience. The game was a slog and a drag to play through, none of the puzzles were unique, challenging or thoughtful at all. This is not an exaggeration, NONE of them. I am genuinely confused about why this game was released. Easily the worst co-op game I have played in the last 2 years and also the least convincing plot/storyline of any game I have played in at least one year as well. Don't waste an afternoon on this game, it will leave you with total confusion and regret.

Definitely the Little Nightmares 3 we should have gotten

I just got the Platinum for the game and loved every second of it. Major upsides come from a long list including atmosphere, worldbuilding, visual story-telling, and more importantly HOW it handles co-op. It's HARD to make a co-op game scary while still driving a narrative for both players so the fact they were able to pull that off should be complimented. The only downsides are the good amount of bugs on release, and the length of the game. I'm sure the bugs will be cleaned up eventually, and if you wait for a sale, you can forgive a 4 hour story. (Not that it's any shorter than any Little Nightmares game) I'd probably put it at 4.5 stars, but I'll lean 5 stars because the good very much outweighs the bad.

Taking place at the very beginning of the game, you will learn how The Boy & The Girl meet and, more importantly, get a hint of why they might be here. At the same time, you will get your first taste of riding the boat around this dark & unforgiving place.

As you find your way through the fog to the shores of The Mill, your search for Hood will introduce you to the many obstacles that block your path, including an encounter with her disfigured captor, known only as Sniffer.

Luckily, in this demo you will not have to defeat him - we’re saving that delight for the full game!
