Easily one of the most addictive city‑builders I’ve ever played

Anno 1800 surprised me in the best possible way. I went into it expecting a slow, old‑school city‑builder and ended up losing full evenings without even noticing. The game just has this incredibly smooth rhythm to it. You start with some farmers and a couple of dirt roads, and before you know it, you’re juggling trade routes, upgrading districts, and managing multiple islands like it’s second nature. What really hooked me is how everything feels connected. When you set up a production chain — like getting wool farms running, turning that into fabric, then clothing — it just clicks. Watching your whole economy come together feels weirdly satisfying, like you’re building a machine and every cog actually matters. The moment the game lets you expand into the New World is where things really open up. Suddenly you’re shipping rum back home, setting up cotton plantations, and timing your trade routes so your main city doesn’t run out of essential goods. There’s such a good “aha” moment when your ships start moving on their own and you realize you’ve basically created a fully automated supply network. Visually, the game is beautiful. Not in a flashy, in-your-face way, but in a “wow, I can zoom in and literally see chimney smoke and tiny workers doing their thing” kind of way. Your city feels alive in a way most strategy games don’t pull off. And I appreciate that the game gives you freedom. If you want to focus on peaceful expansion, you can. If you want to build a beefy navy to protect your stuff, that works too. Nothing feels forced, and the pacing never gets overwhelming. If you like city‑builders, strategy games, or just watching a world grow because of decisions you made, Anno 1800 is absolutely worth playing. It’s relaxing, it’s challenging when it needs to be, and it has that “just one more thing” energy that keeps you up way later than you planned. Five stars, easily.
