Bloated

There's hypothetically a good game under there somewhere, if you scrape off a whole lot of obnoxious new side characters, tedious minigames that rely on bad controls for their challenge, and sections of the original game that were concise and effective but have now been inflated like a racoon carcass clogged in a septic line. Every time I started to find a groove and enjoy myself, the game interrupted me with some unwelcome new nonsense. It desperately needed an editor, and the first thing that editor should have done is push Chadley the Unskippable Dialogue Robot into a trash compactor. By the time I set this game aside it had worn out its welcome so thoroughly that I was only enduring it out of a sense of obligation born from how expensive it was. I should have trusted my instincts after the first game fell so far short of what I wanted, and I will not be returning for the third installment. The best thing I can say about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is that it kept Tetsuya Nomura's "creative vision" quarantined from the rest of the Final Fantasy line for a while.

Best Game of 2024

This game was my favorite game of 2024, I just couldn’t get enough of the combat/story/characters. There’s a lot of optional content available, some may see it as bloat, I didn’t. There’s beauty of the side stuff is that you don’t HAVE to do any of it and you still have a pretty meaty main story line. This game does have some lows in it I’m not going to lie, but it’s high points outweigh them.

Good ideas overshadowed by bloat

For a bit of background, I played the original when it was released, and it didn't stick. It took me years to go back and finish the game. I played Remake and loved it. I had a few issues with the gameplay, but enjoyed what they did with the characters and story. I was excited for Rebirth, but spent around 170 hours on it and regretted most of it. They did a lot right. I never liked Cloud in the original, and they did a great job of making him more sympathetic and human. I loved the side quests that reinforced the character connections and made you feel like they actually were people with feelings and opinions, which the original wasn't great at. The synergy abilities, particularly the defensive ones, fixed the main problem I had with the combat from Remake, and gave a lot of options. So now, for the bad. They have so many abilities based on this synergy system, and so many fights that make you use a solo character that makes this system useless. The open world system overall is tedious. You fight the basic enemies, then the upgraded versions, then again in a coliseum environment, then again in a simulator, and probably another time after that. And sometimes there were conditions on the fight that were almost impossible to meet: i.e. having to put frog rings on 3 out of 4 teammates to not kill something before I pressured it 3 times. I know the mini games have been maligned. They were present in the original, and in Remake, and I realize it's a main point of FF7. They were horrendous in Rebirth. There were too many in general. And then they all had at least one upgraded version that was far harder, and took longer to finish. I spent 250 hours on FFX because I was too busy playing Blitzball to finish the game, but I hated almost all of the minigames in Rebirth and resented the amount of time I spent on them. Particularly because many of them had interesting story points surrounding them, and you had to go through the games to get there. In conclusion, it was an alright game. It did some really good things (characterization, battle improvements, music updates), but I feel that it did not respect the player's time at all. There was far too much filler. After I spent 2 straight hours on a poorly designed minigame (I'm looking at you, frog jump, trying to imitate Fall Guys without understanding that you need to have a set camera point), and forgot the story completely...again...I was just happy to be done with it. I picked up Rebirth as a no-brainer after Remake, but I don't know if I'll get the finale.

Every FF lover needs to play this game

While it may have too many side quests for some, I loved just about all of them. The game was great visually and left me wanting more. I can't wait for part 3!

Ok, but tedious, and annoying

Overall I like what they are doing with the story, but the gameplay took a hit with way too much to do, tedious tasks, and annoying but required mini games throughout the whole thing. Also the focus on Cloud’s relationship with every character was irritating and unnecessary. I really could stand having to do so many mini games just to progress the story, with some of them being needlessly difficult (looking at you, flying chocobo). Mini games should be side quests, not main quests. Speaking of difficulty, getting the summons was so much harder than it needed to be, only for the same one or two to become available in a fight. The relationship aspect was annoying. I really did not care about my responses to every character in every town. Obviously they want Cloud to connect with Aerith so just make it be that and be done with it. That said, after having played Crisis Core, there’s no way Aerith would be attracted to Cloud bc he reminds her of Zack. Zack was charming, and boisterous, and even a little goofy. Cloud on the other hand has the personality of a wet band aid and all of his dialogue options are either sappy, bland, or jerk-like. Aerith is clearly needs to reconnect with Zack. It also dove too far into the anime realm for me. Yes, I know it’s a JRPG but I didn’t get that much of that vibe from the first game, and less so from the original in the 90s. I didn’t really like playing an anime. I’ll still take it over many of the other JRPGs out there but felt it should be scaled back. I am still intrigued by the direction they are going with the story though. I like the multiverse aspect and the fact that you got to bring Zack back as he falls through universes. The end boss battle was good too and I liked that every character got involved. Both Rufus and Sephiroth are enjoyable villains. I ultimately did get a lot of play time out of the game, but I really hope they scale back the mini games, allow for better world exploration, and even out the difficulty on some things.

Amazing FF7 compilation into one

This game is simply amazing, and a personal GOTY title for 2024. I cannot wait how the finale wraps into this amazing world and its wonderful characters. Even for someone like me who never played the OG on the PS1, I was a child at the time but did heard about it I'm having a blast!
